Savory cookies such as these would have been popular amongst the vintage housewife circuit because they would have paired well with tea time or happy hour. They made a quick, inexpensive bite when company came over unannounced as they often did back then. Can you even imagine?

Whether you have company showing up on a whim or just want to add a new savory recipe to your appetizer line up, this cheese cookie recipe fits the bill.

What kind of cheese is good for baking?

Cheese can actually be used in all sorts of baked meals. Whether you are using it in savory desserts, appetizers, or casseroles, it can add flavor and texture to any meal.

Personally, I think sharp, grated cheddar will always win hands down. Sharp cheddar, or even mild cheddar, is great for baking. Reduced fat tends to melt a little rubbery, so I do like using a variety that is not reduced fat or low fat.

How can I prevent cookies from sticking to the pan?

I have found a few different ways to keep cookies from sticking to the pan. By taking a few precautions before hand, you can avoid wasted product and tears later!

You can try lining the cookie sheet with wax paper. This not only prevents sticking but makes the pan easier to clean. I also love Pam Cooking Spray with Flour. This product is GREAT for baking since it adds a bit of flour to the surface as well!

One of the questions I get often about this recipe is: How on Earth do I serve these? Since they are savory, they make an amazing appetizer. You can also serve them as a side to soups and salads. They would pair well with my Old Fashion Corn Chowder Recipe or even my Homemade Beef Stew.

This crumbly cheese cookie recipe would also go well with just about any brunch menu. Think of serving them anytime you need a bread or biscuit side dish.
