Old Fashioned Apple Muffins Recipe

A few weeks ago I was at an antique shop and spotted this adorable recipe booklet. I fell in love with it for the graphic, but the inside was just as sweet. As you might have guessed it was filled with old fashioned apple recipes including the apple muffins recipe you see below.

Not only did I buy it, but I decided to do my own spin on the apple muffins recipe inside. Sorry, I can’t get down with raisins…so I decided to omit those from the recipe and see how they turned out.

Old Fashioned Apple Muffins

First, let’s take a look at what you will need for this muffin recipe. You might just get lucky and see that you have everything you need on hand. The ingredients are super simple.

Old Fashioned Apple Muffins Ingredients

  • shortening
  • light brown sugar
  • egg
  • walnuts
  • flour
  • salt
  • baking soda
  • cinnamon
  • nutmeg
  • cold water
  • vanilla
  • red variety apples

How to Make Apple Muffins

1. Mix the shortening and brown sugar until fluffy.

2. Stir in the beaten egg.

3. Add walnuts, flour, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Mix well.

4. Add in the water, vanilla, and finally apples. Mix well.

Add to muffin cups or well greased muffin pan and bake the mixture at 350 degrees for 30-32 minutes. Remove and top with a sprinkling of brown sugar. Makes 12.

This old fashioned apple muffins recipe can be enjoyed warm with butter, or kept in an air tight container for later. It makes a wonderful addition to your breakfast or brunch menu!

Old Fashioned Apple Muffins

Yield: Makes 12

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 chopped walnuts
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup red variety apples, finely chopped

Instructions

    1. Mix the shortening and brown sugar until fluffy.
